Rose & Mews Size Guide: How Our Dresses Fit Real Bodies

Why Sizing Matters More Than You Think for Maxi Dresses

Finding the right size in a maxi dress is one of the most common challenges in online fashion. Unlike a short dress where a slight size discrepancy is easy to overlook, a floor-length maxi shows every inch of the fit — at the bust, waist, hip and hem. Getting it right makes the difference between a dress that looks like it was made for you and one that looks like you borrowed it.

At Rose & Mews, we've designed all our dresses with real body proportions in mind. Our sizing philosophy is simple: every dress should fit without pulling, gaping or requiring constant adjustment. Here's everything you need to know about finding your perfect size.

How to Measure Yourself for a Maxi Dress

Taking accurate measurements is the most important step. You'll need a soft measuring tape and ideally a friend to help:

Bust: Measure around the fullest part of your chest, keeping the tape parallel to the floor. Keep a finger under the tape to avoid pulling it too tight.

Waist: Measure around the narrowest part of your torso — usually a couple of inches above your belly button. Don't suck in — measure your natural waist.

Hips: Measure around the fullest part of your hips and bottom, usually about 8 inches below the waist.

Height: Stand straight against a wall without shoes and measure from the floor to the top of your head. This is particularly important for maxi dresses — the hem length can vary significantly between brands.

Write down all four measurements before consulting any size chart.

Our Size Chart and Fit Guide

At Rose & Mews, our sizing is designed to fit UK standard measurements with a little additional ease at the waist and hip for comfort throughout a long event. If you're between two sizes, we generally recommend sizing up and adjusting the waist with a simple alteration if needed — it's a much easier fix than a dress that's too small.

For petite customers (under 5'4"): Many of our maxi dresses will be floor-length or near floor-length on petite frames. This often works beautifully — but if you prefer a slight gap above the floor, a quick hem adjustment is simple and inexpensive.

For tall customers (over 5'9"): Our maxi dresses are designed to fall just above the floor on a 5'7" frame. On taller customers, the hem may sit slightly higher — if you prefer a full floor-length sweep, check the product page for the model's height and dress length.

Fit Tips for Specific Dress Styles

Different dress constructions fit differently — here's how each of our main styles fits:

Slip maxi dresses: Our slip dresses are cut on the bias with minimal structure. They're designed to skim the body — if you prefer a looser, more relaxed fit, size up. If you prefer the dress to follow your curves more closely, your standard size is correct.

Ruched maxi dresses: Ruching is forgiving of size variation — it stretches slightly with the body. Size as per your measurements; the ruching will adapt.

Structured jacquard maxi dresses: Our jacquard styles are more structured and don't stretch. Fit to your bust or hip measurement (whichever is larger) and allow the structure of the fabric to create the silhouette.

Backless maxi dresses: For backless styles, the fit at the bust is the critical measurement. Ensure the bust fits correctly — the back detail is adjustable in most of our designs.

Free UK Returns: Our Promise

We understand that buying a dress online — particularly a special occasion dress — involves some uncertainty about the fit. That's why Rose & Mews offers free UK returns on all orders. If your dress doesn't fit perfectly, return it free of charge and we'll exchange it for the correct size.

Our returns process is simple: keep the packaging, try the dress on at home with the shoes and undergarments you plan to wear, and if it's not right, initiate your return within our returns window and send it back via our free returns label.
